Rise Against Hunger - Feb. 18th

On the morning of the Sadie Hawkins dance, my church, First Baptist Church Carrollton, hosted a Rise Against Hunger event that is community-wide. I usually like to go to this event alone and can get service hours for the amount of time I've spent volunteering. Rise Against Hunger is a non-profit organization that involves packaging food and distributing it to help people around the world. Most countries that receive this food are still developing and need assistance concerning food and nutrition. Their main goals are to advocate, educate, and mandate food security all around the globe.

This relates to my blog because my Sadies date, my friend, and I wanted to go before Sadies as a kind of icebreaker before the night began. We met that morning at my church and were immediately put to work by the church staff who were also volunteering. We were assigned to make boxes for the food to be packaged in. This sounds a little boring, but it left room for conversation. All three of us talked about what we wanted to do beyond high school and what our college plans were. I told them that I had not yet decided and that I still had to hear from more colleges.

Eventually, we moved to the actual event, which was to package the rice and bag it up. Each of us was positioned at tables around the room and had a different role. My job was to scoop up the dried vegetables and drop them into the rice bag. Each bag contains rice, grains, dried vegetables, and a bag of seasonings. Each of us had a job at the table to put all of these contents in a bag and seal it up. This went on for about an hour before our shift ended. Over the years we have hosted a Rise Against Hunger event, and the number has increased in the amount of bags that were made. Last year we had a total of about 10,000 bags produced by the time we were finished. I believe that this is an amazing project to be a part of. The amount of things that I've learned just from volunteering means that this can impact anyone in incredible ways. I recommend this project to anyone who likes helping out in the community and the act of serving others.

The Art of Crochet

I'd love to know where my idea to do crochet for my CAS project came from, but I honestly have no clue. However, after I was set on it, I came up with an explanation. It is a wonderful outlet to get me off social media, and I could tap into my creative side of life. This past Friday, my stepmom had a baby boy. What is a more perfect gift to give than a baby blanket? To be honest, It probably won't turn out to be a blanket. I strive to make a three-by-three piece of yarn. It is very clear that I have low expectations for myself.  To get started on my crochet journey, I looked up the definition, "A handicraft in which yarn is made up into a patterned fabric by looping yarn with a hooked needle" (Oxford Languages). I was satisfied when the only materials I needed were yarn and a hooked needle. I was even more pleased to find out that they were one dollar each at the store! Now, where to start? Youtube.  I found a woman who created a series of videos for each step to ta...

CAS Project: Midway Progress Reflection - 3/20

Now that it is past the halfway mark for my CAS progress, I'd say that it's time for a progress check regarding the development of the project. Starting on March 1st, I made many fliers for my project and posted them around the school along with the service project that the Environmental Club is conducting called EcoSneakers. As a refresher, these products are intended to help those who have clothing needs and are lacking resources for clothing. I know many students at Carrollton High School would love the opportunity to explore what clothing options other students have to offer, so I took it upon myself to host this clothing drive. I started collecting clothes on March 4th and will continue to collect until this Friday, March 22nd. There has been a great clothing turnout collectively given by students as well as teachers. I love seeing everyone come together to help this great cause of giving those in need clothing to one another. I met with Mrs. Cochran, the PASS specialist ...

Environmental Club: Recycle Project

On Thursday, February 9th, I conducted an Environmental Club meeting. The meeting topic was to introduce recycling to Carrollton High School. I introduced some ways that we could implement recycling like getting a group of students to collect the bags every day and driving them to the county recycling center. The students who attended the meeting agreed and put out some sources that would be open to doing such. One club member stated to only recycle plastic bottles so It'll be easier to recycle. Students at Carrollton High School use a lot of plastic water bottles. The cafeteria also sells plastic bottles. We settled on the concept of setting out recycling bins that only accept plastic bottles so it will be easy to recycle. We will collect them every day, or as many times as we need to, and take them to the recycling center.  We came up with the idea of placing a QR code on the bin so there could be an incentive for the students who recycle. If students scan the QR code, they can s...
