The Art of Crochet

I'd love to know where my idea to do crochet for my CAS project came from, but I honestly have no clue. However, after I was set on it, I came up with an explanation. It is a wonderful outlet to get me off social media, and I could tap into my creative side of life. This past Friday, my stepmom had a baby boy. What is a more perfect gift to give than a baby blanket? To be honest, It probably won't turn out to be a blanket. I strive to make a three-by-three piece of yarn. It is very clear that I have low expectations for myself.

To get started on my crochet journey, I looked up the definition, "A handicraft in which yarn is made up into a patterned fabric by looping yarn with a hooked needle" (Oxford Languages). I was satisfied when the only materials I needed were yarn and a hooked needle. I was even more pleased to find out that they were one dollar each at the store! Now, where to start? Youtube.

I found a woman who created a series of videos for each step to take while crocheting. The first step I took was, "How to make your foundation chain." "I wish I knew what that was" (my thoughts while pressing play on the video). She started out explaining the art of crochet and continued to state what she was going to do in the video. The process of making crochet begins with making a knot on our index finger and putting a loop over the hook. She went over finger positions. You can either hold the hook like a pencil or like you're holding a drumstick. After, she instructed me to wrap my string around the hook, and then loop the knot over the string. Sounds very confusing, I know. It took me a good 30 minutes before I got the hang of it. Next, I continued to the next few videos and attempted to continue, however, it is a much harder process than I thought. I realized that this is going to take longer than my CAS project deadline, but I'm still going to continue my crochet journey for myself.

In two weeks, I hope to begin talking about my new role in kid's worship at First Baptist Church. I was asked to come help with children's music on Wednesday nights. I know a great deal about music coming from the circumstances I was born into. In spite of this, I am not a great singer or sight reader. I am excited to go more in-depth with this next blog, and I will also give an update on crochet and how my little brother will accept my masterpiece!

CAS Project: Midway Progress Reflection - 3/20

Now that it is past the halfway mark for my CAS progress, I'd say that it's time for a progress check regarding the development of the project. Starting on March 1st, I made many fliers for my project and posted them around the school along with the service project that the Environmental Club is conducting called EcoSneakers. As a refresher, these products are intended to help those who have clothing needs and are lacking resources for clothing. I know many students at Carrollton High School would love the opportunity to explore what clothing options other students have to offer, so I took it upon myself to host this clothing drive. I started collecting clothes on March 4th and will continue to collect until this Friday, March 22nd. There has been a great clothing turnout collectively given by students as well as teachers. I love seeing everyone come together to help this great cause of giving those in need clothing to one another. I met with Mrs. Cochran, the PASS specialist ...

Environmental Club: Recycle Project

On Thursday, February 9th, I conducted an Environmental Club meeting. The meeting topic was to introduce recycling to Carrollton High School. I introduced some ways that we could implement recycling like getting a group of students to collect the bags every day and driving them to the county recycling center. The students who attended the meeting agreed and put out some sources that would be open to doing such. One club member stated to only recycle plastic bottles so It'll be easier to recycle. Students at Carrollton High School use a lot of plastic water bottles. The cafeteria also sells plastic bottles. We settled on the concept of setting out recycling bins that only accept plastic bottles so it will be easy to recycle. We will collect them every day, or as many times as we need to, and take them to the recycling center.  We came up with the idea of placing a QR code on the bin so there could be an incentive for the students who recycle. If students scan the QR code, they can s...
