Environmental Club: Recycle Project

On Thursday, February 9th, I conducted an Environmental Club meeting. The meeting topic was to introduce recycling to Carrollton High School. I introduced some ways that we could implement recycling like getting a group of students to collect the bags every day and driving them to the county recycling center. The students who attended the meeting agreed and put out some sources that would be open to doing such. One club member stated to only recycle plastic bottles so It'll be easier to recycle. Students at Carrollton High School use a lot of plastic water bottles. The cafeteria also sells plastic bottles. We settled on the concept of setting out recycling bins that only accept plastic bottles so it will be easy to recycle. We will collect them every day, or as many times as we need to, and take them to the recycling center.

We came up with the idea of placing a QR code on the bin so there could be an incentive for the students who recycle. If students scan the QR code, they can state their first block teacher. Whichever first block teacher has the most students recycling will have an incentive like a Chick-Fil-A breakfast! Not only will this be good for the environment, but people who look at Carrollton High School will also be impressed that students are recycling their plastic bottles.

This is an incredibly important idea to introduce to Carrollton High School. It helps the environment by reusing the plastic being used by our school. The reputation of our school will also become increasingly good by our possibly new recycling policy. I am really proud of our Environmental Club and how far we have come with introducing new ideas. My next hopes are to continue our campus clean-ups and hikes. We also have a new project with Southwire that may be coming up in the next month. I am ready to see how we can keep Carrollton High School green and clean!

Miss Sparkle Pageant

This past Saturday, I chose to spend my day volunteering with the Serteen Club at Carrollton High School at the Miss Sparkle Pageant: a pageant that contains the special needs community throughout Carrollton. There are Little Miss, Junior Miss, Teen Miss, and Miss categories which separate the girls into four groups. Within their group, they are judged by about ten judges and are each crowned and given a flower at the end of the ceremony. However, there will be one winner throughout each category. Sometime during the pageant, each girl is escorted by a male member and given a description of who they are and their interests. This whole day was a huge learning experience on my part, but it is one experience I will never get tired of sharing. At 12:00 p.m. all of the volunteers arrived to help welcome the girls, sign them in, and hang up their dresses so they could attend the pageant rehearsal. The Art of Crochet

I'd love to know where my idea to do crochet for my CAS project came from, but I honestly have no clue. However, after I was set on it, I came up with an explanation. It is a wonderful outlet to get me off social media, and I could tap into my creative side of life. This past Friday, my stepmom had a baby boy. What is a more perfect gift to give than a baby blanket? To be honest, It probably won't turn out to be a blanket. I strive to make a three-by-three piece of yarn. It is very clear that I have low expectations for myself. To get started on my crochet journey, I looked up the definition, "A handicraft in which yarn is made up into a patterned fabric by looping yarn with a hooked needle" (Oxford Languages). Recycling for the Family

Since mid-fall of 2022, I have encouraged my family to recycle. I noticed how much plastic we use and I wanted to reduce that amount. I thought this project was something I am going to complete for my family. I decided to buy a plastic bin so we can dispose of our glass, paper, plastic, and aluminum. As of this month, I can say that we have successfully been recycling for over 7 months! Not only have we been recycling a great amount, but our trash disposal has also gone down drastically. I took this as a Lowry family win! Every once in a while, I have to remind everyone to dispose of paper, glass, plastic, and aluminum in the recycling bin because sometimes they need a refresher. Whenever our bin gets full, I pack it up in my car along with other bigger cardboard boxes that have been used.
