Serteen Christmas Party

As the holiday season rolls around, the different clubs at school have different ways of celebrating! As for Serteen, a club that encourages students to develop relationships with the special education students at Carrollton High School, many holiday parties are held throughout the year. This year, they had a Christmas party that encouraged all club members to attend so they could bond with their buddies. It was held during fourth block on the last Thursday of the semester and was in Coach Harper's room filled with all of the students in the special education and CBI -- collaborative-based instruction-- classes.

At the start of the party, I gave my gifts to my buddy, Dakota, who loves and is appreciative of everything he receives! He is filled with utmost joy and happiness when Christmas time rolls around and loves to talk with everyone who is around him. I've had the joy to get to know him and his wonderful personality and it really showed during this party. He loved cookie decorating, gingerbread house building, present exchanging, and Christmas movies watching! Every time a song came on, he would show us his extravagant dance moves and his voice while he sang every word. I know that I had a wonderful time with him, I just hope he had the same with me! Spending more and more time with him made me realize that I should take the time to enjoy the little things in life such as the rhythm of a song or the icing on a cookie. Thank you Serteen and Coach Harper allowing me to have this experience with a one-of-a-kind human being!

Miss Sparkle Pageant

This past Saturday, I chose to spend my day volunteering with the Serteen Club at Carrollton High School at the Miss Sparkle Pageant: a pageant that contains the special needs community throughout Carrollton. There are Little Miss, Junior Miss, Teen Miss, and Miss categories which separate the girls into four groups. Within their group, they are judged by about ten judges and are each crowned and given a flower at the end of the ceremony. However, there will be one winner throughout each category. Sometime during the pageant, each girl is escorted by a male member and given a description of who they are and their interests. This whole day was a huge learning experience on my part, but it is one experience I will never get tired of sharing.  At 12:00 p.m. all of the volunteers arrived to help welcome the girls, sign them in, and hang up their dresses so they could attend the pageant rehearsal. While they rehearsed, volunteers continued their role of welcoming contenders. Afte...

Carroll County's Military Ball

This past Saturday, April 15th, I attended Carroll County's Military Formal hosted by all of the county schools. This event is designed for JROCT members from the county schools to recognize special guests and veterans who act as role models for all cadets. I got invited by my brother who is a freshman at Central High School. He is new to the school and wanted someone to attend with him. I couldn't say no and I am glad I didn't! It was a great learning experience.  The event started at approximately 5:00pm. Remember that this is a very formal event so I had to wear a dress like you would wear to prom. I enjoy being at formal events, but this was like no other event I've been to! We started off the evening by meeting the guests of honor and shaking each of their hands. They were very friendly and easy to talk to! I was very eager to get to know some of them. Next, we joined about 100 other people in a room full of fully set tables and drinks ready to be used. Not too l...

My Best Friends are Third Graders

Ever since I was the ripe age of 6, I was addicted to playing teacher. I couldn't get enough! I had four students and they were the same students I used every time I played school. My family used to have this room in our house called the "classroom." This was only a craft room, but to me it was my classroom! I used to beg my sister, mom, grandparents, and my friends when they would come over to play school with me. Because of my whole childhood consisting of teaching, grading fake papers, and giving fake presentations, I was set on being a school teacher. But is that the same case now? The want to teach has worn off for me right now. Pretty sad isn't it? Well, in my second semester of 9th grade, I started the Teaching as a Profession pathway. This regained my love for teaching others a little bit! I think the question to ask now is, "I love teaching and being in a leadership position, but do I really want to be doing it in a classroom?" I really enjoy this ...
