Visiting the Fernbank

This past Tuesday, every IB student along with Mr. Brewer, Ms. Hook, and Mrs. Sewell to the Fernbank in Atlanta. The purpose of this field trip was to educate us on elements of nature and how there is a meaning and importance for everything in nature and even culture. We left at 9:00 am Tuesday morning. The bus ride was really fun and gave us an opportunity to bond with the partial IB students who rode alongside us. The seniors were very accepting of us Juniors and talked all about the senior aspects of IB.

When we arrived, the first thing we did was go out onto a nature trail. It was a little bit like hiking. I enjoyed it very much especially when I got to talk with my peers about what we saw and our own interpretations of what each thing meant to us. We got the opportunity to play on the playground that they offered and to burn some energy. Afterward, we headed into the color exhibit which was all about waves, different Pantone shades, and how color affects the moods of everyone. Later, we examined gravity in-depth and used hands-on techniques to learn more about it. The last thing we looked through was the indoor habitat experience. It was mostly for children, but we enjoyed it very much.

As we finished looking through the gift shop, we decided what food we were going to get at the market we were going to for lunch. There were many options such as Mexican food, Peruvian, African, and other cuisines from different places. My friend and I chose food from African cuisine which was very yummy! Despite it being incredibly spicy, we thought it was good enough to get it again during a future visit. This trip was a great experience. It gave me the opportunity to learn more about nature, food, and my peers!

The Art of Crochet

I'd love to know where my idea to do crochet for my CAS project came from, but I honestly have no clue. However, after I was set on it, I came up with an explanation. It is a wonderful outlet to get me off social media, and I could tap into my creative side of life. This past Friday, my stepmom had a baby boy. What is a more perfect gift to give than a baby blanket? To be honest, It probably won't turn out to be a blanket. I strive to make a three-by-three piece of yarn. It is very clear that I have low expectations for myself.  To get started on my crochet journey, I looked up the definition, "A handicraft in which yarn is made up into a patterned fabric by looping yarn with a hooked needle" (Oxford Languages). I was satisfied when the only materials I needed were yarn and a hooked needle. I was even more pleased to find out that they were one dollar each at the store! Now, where to start? Youtube.  I found a woman who created a series of videos for each step to ta...

CAS Project: Midway Progress Reflection - 3/20

Now that it is past the halfway mark for my CAS progress, I'd say that it's time for a progress check regarding the development of the project. Starting on March 1st, I made many fliers for my project and posted them around the school along with the service project that the Environmental Club is conducting called EcoSneakers. As a refresher, these products are intended to help those who have clothing needs and are lacking resources for clothing. I know many students at Carrollton High School would love the opportunity to explore what clothing options other students have to offer, so I took it upon myself to host this clothing drive. I started collecting clothes on March 4th and will continue to collect until this Friday, March 22nd. There has been a great clothing turnout collectively given by students as well as teachers. I love seeing everyone come together to help this great cause of giving those in need clothing to one another. I met with Mrs. Cochran, the PASS specialist ...

Environmental Club: Recycle Project

On Thursday, February 9th, I conducted an Environmental Club meeting. The meeting topic was to introduce recycling to Carrollton High School. I introduced some ways that we could implement recycling like getting a group of students to collect the bags every day and driving them to the county recycling center. The students who attended the meeting agreed and put out some sources that would be open to doing such. One club member stated to only recycle plastic bottles so It'll be easier to recycle. Students at Carrollton High School use a lot of plastic water bottles. The cafeteria also sells plastic bottles. We settled on the concept of setting out recycling bins that only accept plastic bottles so it will be easy to recycle. We will collect them every day, or as many times as we need to, and take them to the recycling center.  We came up with the idea of placing a QR code on the bin so there could be an incentive for the students who recycle. If students scan the QR code, they can s...
