This past Saturday, April 15th, I attended Carroll County's Military Formal hosted by all of the county schools. This event is designed for JROCT members from the county schools to recognize special guests and veterans who act as role models for all cadets. I got invited by my brother who is a freshman at Central High School. He is new to the school and wanted someone to attend with him. I couldn't say no and I am glad I didn't! It was a great learning experience.
The event started at approximately 5:00pm. Remember that this is a very formal event so I had to wear a dress like you would wear to prom. I enjoy being at formal events, but this was like no other event I've been to! We started off the evening by meeting the guests of honor and shaking each of their hands. They were very friendly and easy to talk to! I was very eager to get to know some of them. Next, we joined about 100 other people in a room full of fully set tables and drinks ready to be used. Not too long after we sat down, the event started with the top cadets introducing the guests of honor and the overall summary of what was to come during the evening. Food came next which I was very excited for. We sat with complete strangers I had never met before so it was nice meeting new people. I met a veteran who had two bachelor's, two master's, and one doctoral degree who was very interesting to talk to! He said that he received all of his college education for free because he was in the military and that sounded very appealing until I think of all the schools I want to go to out of state.
As the evening continued on, there were speeches and awards presented to long-time members of the sponsors that helped put together the formal. Afterward, there was to be a dance, but my brother and I decided that it was best to head home! I am so happy that he invited me to this event which I knew nothing about. I learned so much about what the county schools do for their JROTC and what JROTC does in general. It was a wonderful evening had by all!
