A Little Help Goes a Long Way

On January 28th, I felt the will to help one of my friends who has been recently injured at the gym. Because she hasn't been to the gym in a long time and her injury requires long term recovery, I decided to help her with some workouts she could do while in that period of recovery. I invited her to come along with me to Sportsplex in Carrollton to get a workout in, but a workout that is simple, effective, and will lead her towards a safe recovery. Her leg was injured while playing volleyball this past October. Since I am a former volleyball player, I took it upon myself to empathize with her situation the best I could. I knew that it was hard to be physically active at this time so that one of the main reasons why I took time to help her.

We started with simple arm workouts. She wanted to be bold and go for bench presses. We both took turns spotting each other while the other was doing the workout. After about thirty minutes of weights, we made our way to cardio. While she was biking on the machine to gain agility with her leg movements. She later went on the treadmill for a brisk walk and cool down. We couldn't forget stretching! Did you know that stretching is one of the most important parts when working out? I make sure to allow myself about 5-10 minutes before or after my workout to stretch because of the many benefits. We finished off our time at the gym in the sauna because it assists with soreness and muscle recovery. She was really glad she came along with me to the gym today because she said that she needed more physical movement in her life after her injury. All in all, the day was really successful and is likely to happen again!

Miss Sparkle Pageant

This past Saturday, I chose to spend my day volunteering with the Serteen Club at Carrollton High School at the Miss Sparkle Pageant: a pageant that contains the special needs community throughout Carrollton. There are Little Miss, Junior Miss, Teen Miss, and Miss categories which separate the girls into four groups. Within their group, they are judged by about ten judges and are each crowned and given a flower at the end of the ceremony. However, there will be one winner throughout each category. Sometime during the pageant, each girl is escorted by a male member and given a description of who they are and their interests. This whole day was a huge learning experience on my part, but it is one experience I will never get tired of sharing.  At 12:00 p.m. all of the volunteers arrived to help welcome the girls, sign them in, and hang up their dresses so they could attend the pageant rehearsal. While they rehearsed, volunteers continued their role of welcoming contenders. Afte...

CAS Project Final Reflection - 5/6

As my CAS Project came to a close, it concluded a little over a month ago, I have allowed myself some time to reflect on my experience regarding the planning process and the implications of what led to my final results. It is safe to say that I am nothing short of proud of this project and I have the hope that it will continue on through a rising senior or another member of a club who hopes to provide the school with exposure to a clothing drive. My vision for this project was not only to develop a space where the students of Carrollton High School could shop from each other’s clothes that have no longer been used but to also provide clothing for people who may need extra items that they lack. Looking back, I admire the period leading up to the week of the project. I sought out all of the steps needed to continue the development of the project and had several planning days with just me and my trusty computer. I made connections with people and resources who were crucial in t...
